Celebrating Three Kings Day

January 6 is known in the Catholic faith as, El Día de Los Reyes, or, Three Kings Day.

ABILENE, Texas — In the Catholic community, Christmas decorations are still up even after the holidays to celebrate El Día de Los Reyes on January 6. It’s also known as Epiphany, or, Three Kings Day.

It’s a feast day which celebrates the revelation of the new baby Jesus. Three wise men traveled on camel to Bethlehem to bring gifts to the new born king.

The gifts included incense, myrrh and gold.

Traditionally, young children put a pair of shoes under their Christmas tree in hopes of gifts from the three Magi.

Families also feast with la Rosca de Reyes, or, Three Kings Bread. It’s a ring-shaped cake topped with candied-dried fruit representing jewels, and a little baby representing baby Jesus.

The tradition is whoever finds the baby will host a party on February 2nd, also known as El Día de la Candelaria, or, Candlemas Day.
