Tornado tears through a family's house in Brady this weekend

One Brady family is counting their blessings after a tornado strikes their home over the weekend. The mother shared with our Brenda Matute how the winds ripped off a chunk of her roof while her children were home and how the community came together to help her out.

SAN ANGELO, TX — "I was actually caught volunteering at the Oktoberfest" "and i seen the clouds just swirling you seen it happening"

Just a mile from her house Jessica Ettinger says she heard the tornado sirens go off.

"They wouldn’t let me come home for my own safety,” said Ettinger. "I hadn't heard from my husband and they finally let me leave and I pulled up probably about two blocks from here and I seen all the damage and I come running."

Her children and husband were all home as the tornado tore through their property.

"The noise was so loud, the wind was so loud they didn't even hear the siren go off,” said Ettinger. “He hurdled them all into the bathroom because I have 3 kids."

While she found her family safe, her home was not as fortunate.

"We lost an awning back there, the top part of our garage the roof is gone, it busted a window back there,” said Ettinger. "These are our pecan trees, that was our major shade and we pretty much lost them."

And the piece of roof that the strong winds stole is now causing more problems

"We are now having leakage problems, in the house, hopefully this will hold until we can get another fix on it, because I don’t know if the tarp will hold until we get what we need done," said Ettinger.

But for now she says she's counting her blessings and thanking her neighbors.

"They helped us put the tarp in and climbed up on the roof had the neighbor he brought us a ladder up there in the middle of a lightning storm and they're trying to fix our roof with metal,” she said. “If it wouldn't have been for the neighborhood effort my house probably would have flooded.”

"It really helped having the community come together and I’m really blessed to be a part of it," said Ettinger.
