SAN ANGELO, Texas — After a shooting on the northwest side of San Angelo Tuesday left a 28-year-old San Angelo man dead, court documents give details on the arrest of Ernesto Hernandez's alleged killer.

According to an affidavit, Gabriel James Ortiz Sr., 43, shot Hernandez multiple times at a residence in the 2000 block of Bailey Street. After being dispatched to a shooting call at that location, San Angelo Police located a man fitting the description given to dispatch of the suspect.

Police detained the man, who was wearing a green Harrison Roofing shirt and a yellow cap, and identified him as Ortiz. Ortiz was found to be in possession of a Glock handgun. He was taken into custody after police took the gun away from him.

Officers learned Hernandez's fiance, Alundra Gutierrez, had positively identified Hernandez's body and the crime scene was reviewed.

An SAPD detective advised that Hernandez has suffered several gunshot wounds, including two to the torso and wounds to his head. There were two loaded rounds of ammunition near Hernandez's body that were consistent with ammunition used in Glock firearms.

Officers interviewed a witness, who told them they heard what they believed to be a gunshot and then heard more of the same sounds when they entered the alleyway between Walnut and Bailey streets. The witness told police they heard another shot and then walked down the alley to the east.

According to the witness, they observed a Hispanic male in a green shirt and yellow cap with a handgun and heard someone say something to the effect of "don't do it." The witness told police they saw the subject fire two additional rounds in a downward angle toward the ground. After moving forward, the witness saw someone lying on the ground in the direction the two rounds were fired.

An additional witness told police they heard what they believed to be gunshots at the location and saw someone in a Harrison Roofing shirt, who approached the witness, advising them to call 9-1-1, because he had just shot someone.
