Volunteers help to light up spirit, home of Norfolk police officer's family

Norfolk police officer Seth Amos passed away unexpectedly from acute lung failure. The community came together to bring his family some Christmas spirit by decorating its house.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — Stacy Amos’ smile was almost as bright as her home that volunteers decorated. Their work also was the one of the best Christmas presents for her family.

“It’s so cute. It seriously looks like a gingerbread house,” said Amos. “I am blown away. I mean, you can see how amazing that looks, and it just brings so much joy to me and my children when it’s hard to find moments of joy.”

Amos' husband, Norfolk police officer Seth Amos, passed away unexpectedly in October from Acute Lung Failure.

“There’s a lot of grief still happening, so being able to have moments like this and nights like this really brings so much light into our life and into the season for us,” said Amos.

In the past, Seth was the one climbing on the roof, stringing up the bulbs. This year, Troy Taylor and about a dozen other members of the Norfolk Fire Department decided to step in and lend a hand.

"And to help out a brother in blue, you know we’re firemen, they are police officers, but you know we have a camaraderie, this little token of appreciation is the least we can do,” said Taylor.

Firefighters volunteered about six hours of their time to install more than 5,000 lights. Some of the lights covered 6-year-old Carson Amos' backyard climbing tree. Carson was so excited, he couldn't stand. One-year-old Bode Amos was mesmerized by the magic.

“Christmas Vacation has been my all-time favorite Christmas movie for the longest time," Taylor said. "My wife has called me Griswold quite a bit.”

Amos said there is no doubt Seth is looking down on the family. How could he not? The house is too beautiful to miss.

“He would just be overwhelmed with the fact that we’re taken care of and that people are looking out for us,” said Amos, who wants the whole neighborhood to enjoy the display, especially children.

“That’s exactly what Christmas is all about, the kids being happy, being excited,” said Amos.
