Abilene Police Department receives 4,100 firework complaints over holiday weekend

APD reports they received 1248 calls on July fourth in regards to fireworks

ABILENE, Texas — According to the Abilene Police Department, they received over 4,100 calls over the holiday weekend in regards to fireworks.

Totals for each day are from 12a to 11:59p:

July 2 - 850 calls

July 3 - 990 calls

July 4 - 1248 calls

July 5 - 1020 calls

APD police reports indicate there were five driving while intoxicated arrests made over the weekend and four public intoxication arrests.

According to a press release from the Abilene Fire Department there was four structure fires taking place Saturday, July 4th and the causes are still under investigation at this time.

"On July 04, 2020, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the Abilene Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 1400 block of Griggs Street. Fire crews arrived to find a single family residence with nothing showing. Crews investigated and found smoke in the house. Crews were able to locate the cause of the smoke at the heating unit and stop its production. Damage to the building was confined to the heating system. The occupants were able to get out of the structure and there were no reported injuries. The damage was confined to the heating unit and the estimated loss was $5000.00. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On July 04, 2020, at approximately 11:15 a.m., the Abilene Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 2600 block of Nonesuch Street. Fire crews arrived to find an apartment complex with nothing showing. Crews investigated and found a board smoking at the top of a stairwell. Crews were able to use a water can to put out the fire. Damage to the building was confined to the board. No occupants were in danger and there were no reported injuries. The estimated loss was $100.00. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On July 04, 2020, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the Abilene Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 1000 block of Elm Street. Fire crews arrived to find a trailer on fire in the side yard of the residence. Crews were able to quickly put the fire out. Damage was confined to the contents of the trailer and a car parked nearby. No occupants were in danger and there were no reported injuries. The estimated loss was $3,000.00. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On July 04, 2020, at approximately 11:20 p.m., the Abilene Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 2900 block of Sunlake Drive. Fire crews arrived to find a mobile home with smoke showing. Crews were able to quickly put the fire out. Damage was confined to the exterior of the house. No occupants were home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries reported. The estimated loss was $3,000.00. The cause of the fire is under investigation."
