Day of the Dead also known as Dia de los Muertos, which is Nov. 2, is a very important holiday celebrated mainly in central and southern Mexico. Nov. 1 is all All Saint's Da.
Throughout the years, the holiday has evolved in the United States, as well.
Recently, about 250 people attended an event at the Luna Culture Lab called Vida Y Muerte (Life and Death). It was an evening where people were able to experience authentic Dia de los Muertos art.
There were calaveras (skulls) painted by local artists that were auctioned off to benefit Los Diablos -- which provides scholarships to Latino students at Arizona State University.
12 News had the chance to do a Facebook live with artist Aztec Smurf and he showed us how to create a quick and easy sugar skull decoration.
The live stream took about 30 minutes and the final piece was beautiful. Smurf says he usually takes hours to finish a sugar skull decoration.
These sugar skulls are great to use as a decorating piece if you plan on making an altar for Day of the Dead.
If you plan on trying out this craft, Smurf suggests you get a plaster skull so the paint can stick nice and easy.
