Another year of eligibility for spring athletes impacts ACU

With transitioning in collegiate athletics, Allen Ward talks about the plans for the department.

There is a lot of uncertainty in the world of sports right now. Collegiate athletes are conflicted and disappointed about the ending of their seasons.

"Our whole emphasis and NCAA's emphasis is protecting our student athletes. That's what i'm going to try to do here," Allen Ward, director of athletics at Abilene Christian University, said.

With NCAA's approval of another year of eligibility for spring athletes, many decisions have to be made in the coming months.

"We have a pretty good feel of who we think will be coming back, I think we had 22 kids who are eligible."

However, some senior student-athletes already had plans following May graduation, from getting married to full-time jobs.

For those seniors who do come back, they will have to take classes in the fall and wait for their spring competitions in February and March. But we want to do what's best for them and give them the opportunity to finish out on a high note," Ward added.

While there is a lot of moving parts right now, the departments main goal is to be there for the student-athletes.

"Our focus has been on the academic side of things, this is brand new for our athletes, making sure they have the support they need for the online classes to be successful right now."
