Texas 1A-4A football teams are back on the grind

Eden's head coach Shay Avants reflects on the first day of practice

EDEN, Texas — Texas 1A-4A high school football teams hit the field Monday for their first day of practice. 5A and 6A schools still have to wait to get back to work.

The head coach of the Eden Bulldogs, Shay Avants, is ready for his second year as head coach but is nervous the season could potentially not be a full one.

"I hope we're able to make it through the year without any shut downs. The one thing i'm most concerned about is starting and not being able to finish."

Coach is looking forward to working with his returners and getting the team back up to speed for their first game on Aug. 27.

"Knowing what we have coming back, I'm excited about this year. We were a lot further along on our first day than I thought we would be."

Eden is losing a lot of the defensive end so coach hopes to fill the gaps on defense before the season begins.

"We're not going to be as big on the defensive side of the ball as we were last year. We will have to focus on utilizing our speed. We won't miss a beat offensively but we are going to have to find our identity on the defensive side of the ball," coach Avants said.

We will continue to highlight football teams across West Texas leading up to the season kicking off for 1A-4A schools Aug. 27.
