SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Recreational Department of the city of San Angelo is gearing up for a great basketball season. Registration is ongoing for the upcoming boy's and girl's basketball season which will lead to the 2020 Texas state boy's championship basketball tournament. San Angelo just won the bid to be the host city for the tournament in March.
To qualify for the tournament, teams must win their regional tournament after their regular season.
“We have a basketball league for youth individuals. It goes to 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U. Last year we had 151 teams. We are looking to increase that a little bit more this year," City of San Angelo Recreational Manager Brent Casey explains, "It has gone up every year on average 8 to 15 different teams so looking to make that a bigger and better thing. We are expanding out. So we have teams coming from Abilene, we have teams coming from Sonora, we have some other teams coming from smaller towns that are close to an hour away. It’s getting out there and people are getting to know that this is a great league. It continues to grow, and it continues to be a great league and a good place for them to participate."
San Angelo held the 2017 Texas state girl's championship basketball tournament but has never hosted the boy's tournament. This is a first for the city which would have a huge economic impact on the area.
“This is a great thing for the city. It’s a great way to have people come in and visit our city," says Casey, "So we’d love to our part and get the tournaments here. We’ve increased the tournaments tremendously over the past 4 1/2 years. And we’re looking to do that even more. The Texas state tournaments are just one of the things that continue to grow. And it gets people into our city. Some for the first time. Yes absolutely, they spend money on hotels, they purchase gas, they are eating in our city and spending money in our great restaurants that we have in San Angelo. So it is always a great thing to have them here.”
