An Abilene man died Tuesday evening from injuries sustained in a crash at the intersection of Oldham Lane and Industrial Boulevard Tuesday morning.

Francisco Pena, 31, died from traumatic injuries sustained in the crash in southeast Abilene, according to a press release from the Abilene Police Department.

The crash happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. Tuesdayat the intersection of Oldham and Industrial. According to police, a white 2008 Toyota Tundra, driven by Marshall Salter, 26, of Abilene was traveling eastbound on Industrial. Salter stopped at the stop sign at Oldham Lane, then proceeded into the intersection.

A 2002 gold Dodge Ram pickup truck hauling a trailer filled with concrete material was traveling south on Oldham Lane. The Dodge broadsided the Tundra.

The Dodge then continued south, struck a utility pole and snapped it in half. The trailer filled with concrete broke and slammed into the cab of the truck, causing extensive damage.

The driver of the Dodge, Florencio Martinez, 59, of Abilene had minor injuries.

His passenger, Francisco Pena, was trapped in the vehicle. The Abilene Fire Department extricated Pena after a two-hour effort. He was transported to the hospital where he died at 5:45 p.m.

According to the release, Pena sustained major injuries to his lower body and his neck and head area.

A passenger in the Tundra was also taken to the hospital for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries.

APD said alcohol does not appear to be a factor and no citations have been issued. The driver of the Tundra appears to have failed to yield right of way, according to the release. The investigation continues.

The Abilene Fire and Police departments, MetroCare, Taylor Electric Co-op and Sudden Impact all assisted with the crash.
