Houston airports expect to see 1.7 million travelers this spring break

Airports are asking flyers to add one extra hour to their schedules.

HOUSTON — Spring break travel this season is turning out to be the busiest Houston airports have seen in years.

“We’re expecting a little over 1.7 million travelers to make their way through Houston airports from March 10 through March 20, so that number represents approximately a 40% increase from what we saw on spring break last year," said Houston Airport System spokesman Augusto Bernal.

The lines of cars tonight at Bush Intercontinental Airport – stretched for miles.

All of the Houston area’s major school districts scheduled spring break on the same week this year, meaning everyone is trying to get up in the air at the same time.

“I was eight minutes late to check-in, eight minutes," said flyer Mark Guerrero.

Guerrero says he missed his flight yesterday, and catching a new one hasn’t been easy.

He had no idea until we told him that spring break starts tonight. In addition to the influx of travelers tonight and this weekend, road construction near the airport has slowed things down even more.

“That’s why we’re asking people to build in at least an additional extra hour to their arrivals," Bernal said. "Four hours for international flights, and three hours for domestic flights.”
