Damaging winds and large hail likely in parts of West Texas Monday evening

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will develop Monday afternoon across West Texas. These cells will be very small in coverage, but pack the threat of very large hailstones and potentially damaging winds. The National Weather Service has issued a slight risk (level two of five) across a good portion of the Concho Valley, including San Angelo. A marginal risk (level one of five) has been issued for portions of the Big Country, including Abilene.

Isolated activity is expected to develop around 4 p.m. in the Concho Valley and quickly become severe.

The main threat will be from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. with large hail (potentially up to tennis balls) and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

The severe risk will become lower after sunset, but a few isolated storms may continue until around midnight, especially in our eastern communities.
