Extreme drought conditions plague parts of the Big Country before much-needed showers Friday

The Big Country has not seen decent rainfall in more than two months. This could all change Friday as a weak cold front brings much-needed wet weather.

ABILENE, Texas — It has been 66 days since July 9. During that time, Abilene Regional Airport has only picked up on 0.2" of rainfall. The normal rainfall for this period is almost 5 inches.

Because of the lack of rain across the region, parts of the Big Country are currently suffering from extreme drought conditions. In fact, with only 0.02" of rain officially recorded for the month of September in Abilene, it is currently the fourth driest September so far on record.

Thankfully, rain is in the forecast as we end the week. A dissipating and weakening cold front is moving through the area late Friday morning, with showers and thunderstorms along it. This activity is projected to dissipate over the next few hours, but additional rainfall is likely Friday afternoon and evening.

This rainfall is likely to put a small dent in the drought, with drought conditions likely to continue. The next week does not give another chance of rain for the Big Country as we go back into a hot and dry pattern entering the middle portion of September.
