If you think it's hot now, wait 'til the weekend

We have yet to hit 100-degrees so far this year in West Texas. However, that's expected to change just in time for the upcoming weekend.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — There is no doubt that it has already been hot across West Texas this year. The past few weeks have seen heavy rainfall and flash flooding. Now, with the additional moisture in the air, humidity values have been quite high. This has made it feel much hotter than the air temperature would suggest -- we call this heat index.

Average highs in both Abilene and San Angelo are around 90°F in early June. So, heat is no stranger to the area this time of year.

However, excessive heat has stayed away so far.

This year, both Abilene and San Angelo have yet to record a day above 100°F. This is in contrast to this time last year, when San Angelo had already recorded six days above the century mark, and five days for the Key City. This may change this weekend, as West Texas gets its first glance at summer heat.

Keep in mind the average first 100-degree day in Abilene is June 14 and in San Angelo it's June 5, according to the National Weather Service Office in Abilene/San Angelo.

Rainfall is expected through Thursday, keeping temperatures mainly in the middle 80s.  We will dry out heading into the weekend, with temperatures in the lower 90s Friday, and upper 90s for Saturday and Sunday, with plenty of sunshine expected.  San Angelo may break the 100-degree mark on Sunday, markings its first day in  the triple digits!

Because the humidity values are expected to stay elevated through the weekend, this will make the heat feel even worse.  Heat index values will be several degrees above 100. So, be sure to take it easy if you are out and about this weekend, as we have not seen heat like this since last summer.

Rain chances once again return heading into next week, with temperatures expected to fall back below average. Temperatures in the middle to upper 80s will be likely next week behind our next cold front, set to arrive in the area by Monday.
