SAN ANGELO, Texas — Over the last decade, San Angelo residents have been asking city officials to repair countless streets. This year, more than 10 streets have had some form of reconstruction, but there were still some delays.

From the sudden winter storm earlier this year to major supply chain issues towards the end of the year. City of San Angelo Communications Manager Brian Groves said some streets could have been finished sooner but there were a lot of major factors stopping that from happening.

"The winter storm area impacted a lot of things. From my understanding it impacted some of the concrete plants in the state and because of that it was slow getting concrete and slow getting the steel and materials and then you have that compounded with manpower issues and not having enough crews to do that work," Groves said.

In spite of some hardships, millions of dollars were allocated towards street improvements. Streets such as Bell and Chadbourne have been complained about for decades, but are now both near 99 percent completion, according to Groves..

Residents say they’re grateful for the City finally getting to work on road improvements, but aren’t fans of so many streets being worked on at the same time. Groves said working on more than one street at a time is actually a good thing.

"We get that question a lot of why are you all doing so many street projects at once. And it's part of the method and it takes a long time to design these projects. It takes a long time to work on these projects so that's why it's so many things going on and it's actually a good thing," he said.

Future street projects scheduled to continue or begin in 2022 include Rio Concho Drive, College Hills Boulevard - Loop 306 to West Avenue N, and Howard Street.
