9-1-1 emergency service dispatchers needed in San Angelo

SAPD Sgt. Chris Carpenter is encouraging people to apply for the position, complete training and help those in need in the community.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — When some people think of first responders, they think of nurses, firefighters or police officers. While these positions are extremely vital, the first people called when someone is in an emergency situation are 9-1-1 emergency dispatchers.

San Angelo has at least eight open positions for emergency service dispatchers. The San Angelo dispatch office takes emergency calls for all of Tom Green County.

The SAPD Communications Division is one of the most vital services for both the police and fire departments and also serves as a critical link between citizens in need and responding personnel. Dispatchers receive and dispatch requests for police, fire, EMS and other emergency and non-emergency services.

“A dispatcher is almost like a counselor. They’re someone to talk to when they don’t know who to call or what to do in an emergency situation. The job can be very challenging but is rewarding when you can help those in need,” San Angelo Police Department Sgt. Chris Carpenter said.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed a house bill in 2019 classifying emergency dispatch operators as first responders.

A position as a dispatcher isn’t like applying for most jobs. Applicants have to go through a background check, polygraph test, physical exam, skills test, psychological evaluation and a hearing test. This entire process takes at least a month. Then after that, they have to go through training on how to use dispatch software and practice taking emergency calls.

Carpenter said the entire process can take six-eight months.

Donald Salamanca completed all of the necessary training and started at the call center in October 2021. He said while it’s not always easy, he enjoys being able to help those who need it.

“My skin isn’t as thick as I thought it was but I am learning how to handle it pretty much every single call. We’re helping the community and that’s why I entered this field. I want to make a difference,” Salamanca said.

Carpenter said to applicants who think they can do the job, the department is here for them. His team is always trying to find the diamonds in the rough; the hard-working dispatchers and public servants who have it in their heart to help people.
