Blood donation centers are asking for help from the community

San Angelo blood donations have seen a major drop in donors because of COVID-19.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Vitalant in San Angelo is asking for the community to donate something we all have, and it does not cost a thing.

In a press release sent out, Vitalant in 40 states has declared a critical shortage of blood as supplies have been significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Shelter-in-place orders led to thousands of blood drives to be canceled across the country since early March, resulting in a loss of 150,000 uncollected blood donations.

Donor Care Manager Billy Jones said Vitalant in San Angelo has lost many donations.

"Greater than 60 percent of our blood donations come from local blood drives where we take a collection crew out into the community," Jones said. "The shortage comes from the shutdown of many of the schools and local businesses where we would park."

Jones noticed a dip in donations because people are worried about the spread of germs. He said people are taking social distancing serious when it comes to blood, because of the number of people coming in and out of donation centers.

"Some of the donors out there that are apprehensive about getting out of being around other people," Jones said "You know, whether that's coming to donate blood or going to the grocery store."

Every single piece of medical equipment is wiped down, and the staff ensures every part is disinfectant to make sure the next donor feels at ease when they come to donate. The center will continue to follow protocol when it comes to disposing of needles and other medical equipment.

Jones knows these are hard times, but donating blood is one of most selfless acts a person can do.

"I would say that there's probably not a greater feeling out there," Jones said. "To be a part of transforming someone else's life in a positive manner."

All it takes to help save a life is just 45 minutes of someone’s day.
