Fifth grader from Abilene is diagnosed with leukemia, currently getting treatment at Cook Children’s Medical Center

Ten-year-old Caleb Devereaux Jr. says he's not scared because he prays every day and believes he will get better.

ABILENE, Texas — Ten-year-old Caleb Devereaux Jr., who was recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, is currently undergoing treatment at Cook Children’s Medical Center.

The Abilene fifth-grader, who is also deaf, has shown strength and resilience throughout his battle with A.M.L. Despite the challenges he faces, he and his family remain positive and determined to overcome his illness.

Caleb's mother, Vanessa Rodriguez, has been his primary caregiver and advocate since receiving the diagnosis. A.M.L. is known to spread quickly unless treated immediately upon diagnosis. Because of the urgency of Caleb's treatment, Vanessa hasn’t been able to work, resulting in a significant financial strain on the family.

Recognizing the burden the family faces, some in the community have rallied to offer support. A fundraising campaign has been started by family members to help cover the family's immediate needs.

Vanessa said the family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of support they’ve received so far. They are overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of their community, which has renewed their hope and determination to fight Caleb's leukemia together.

Caleb expressed his gratitude to everyone who has rallied behind him and his family. He signed in ASL, saying he is not scared because he prays every day and believes he will get better.

As his treatment continues at Cook Children’s Medical Center, Vanessa says she is hopeful that Caleb will go into remission. The family believes with the community's continued support, they will overcome the financial obstacles and emerge stronger from this difficult chapter in their lives.
