Keep San Angelo Beautiful Household Hazardous Waste & Eco-Fair to return in May

KSAB says it collected more than 44,000 pounds of hazardous waste materials, including 65% of household paint products.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Keep San Angelo Beautiful says the Household Hazardous Waste & Eco-Fair will be returning again for this year.

Charlotte Anderson, Keep San Angelo Beautiful executive director, said electronics will be newly accepted as items at this year's event. However, the following will not be accepted:

"We cannot take CRT monitors, but we can take computers, phones, items like that," Anderson said. "One of the greatest things that we're going to take is tires. So, through this event, we'll be able to take up to six tires per vehicle and these are just going to be car tires and truck tires. We're not taking any tractor tires or different tires from vehicles."

The KSAB staff will also be collecting those common household hazardous chemical items which may be sitting around the house - including pesticides, stericides, pool and photo chemicals, and household cleaners just to name a few. Community members are to bring these items in a container where they are identifiable.

Anderson explains why it is important to make the substance identifiable: "These are and can be flammable liquids so it's very important that the items that you bring are labeled."

The number one goal for Keep San Angelo Beautiful is to create awareness and to also inform people to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Anderson said, "This 44,000 pounds of materials will be taken out of our landfill and will be taken for recycling. So, we're very grateful for that. It's an opportunity to beautify our community and enhance the safety of our neighborhoods by removing all of these materials."

The event is expected to take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 22.
