SAN ANGELO, Texas — UPDATE (4 p.m. Jan. 1): The 23-year-old man killed in a downtown San Angelo alley had agreed to meet the suspect arrested in his death early Monday, San Angelo Police said.

The SAPD confirmed the death of the man, who was not identified by police, and the arrest of 33-year-old Ryan Renfroe, who has been charged with murder.

Officers went to the 100 block of South Chadbourne Street early Monday on a call about a shooting victim. They found the victim in the east alley with a gunshot wound. Officers and medics tried life-saving measures on the victim, the SAPD said, but he was "found to be deceased".

Renfroe was at the scene and was detained while waiting for the department's Criminal Investigations Division.

Investigators learned the victim and Renfroe knew each other and the shooting stemmed from a previous confrontation, which they agreed to meet and continue in the alley next to a local bar. Once they met in the alley, the victim was allegedly shot and killed by Renfroe, police said.

Jail records show Renfroe was booked into the Tom Green County Jail at 10:43 a.m. Monday with no bond.

The shooting is still under investigation and the SAPD said more information could be released at a later time.

The department is asking anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting to contact the SAPD non-emergency dispatch line at 325-657-4315 and reference Case No. 2024-0000006.
