Investigation launched into train car derailment near Trent

Social media questions circulated about strong winds being to blame for the incident. Wind gusts were as high as 58 mph during storms in Taylor County Tuesday.

TAYLOR COUNTY, Texas — Union Pacific says an investigation has been opened after about two dozen rail cars derailed around 8 p.m. Tuesday east of Trent.

Mike Jaixen, Union Pacific senior manager - communications, said in an email no injuries were reported in the incident. 

Crews from the railroad company are responding to the incident in Taylor County.

Social media comments question whether strong winds from thunderstorms in the area were to blame for the derailment. The National Weather Service reported wind gusts as high as 58 mph, associated with thunderstorms in the area, were measured at Abilene Regional Airport Tuesday evening.
