TxDOT (Abilene) provides updates on road conditions during winter weather in Big Country

As winter weather is moving through the Big Country, TxDOT in Abilene is providing updates on road conditions for drivers.

ABILENE, Texas — As winter weather continues to move through the state, the Texas Department of Transportation (Abilene) is giving social media updates Thursday morning as drivers hit the road.

Borden County - 6:43 a.m. 

"It's 17 degrees with a light mist falling. Roads are clear of ice and snow. Roads are wet so reduce your speed, increase following distance, and do not engage cruise control. Buckle up."

Fisher County - 6:41 a.m.

"It's 19 degrees with a light mist falling. Crews have reported patches of ice on state-maintained roads. Travel is discouraged at this time. Crews are working to improve road conditions"

Jones County - 6:36 a.m. 

"It's 19 degrees with a light mist falling. US 277 and US 83 are wet but clear of ice and snow. Crews have reported ice on other state-maintained roads in Jones County. Travel is discouraged."

Stonewall County - 6:33 a.m.

"It's 19 degrees with a light mist falling. State-maintained roads are wet with ice on them. Travel is discouraged."

Nolan County - 6:28 a.m.

"Crews have reported ice on IH 20 in Nolan County. Traffic is moving slowly. If you have to travel this morning make sure to drive slow. Avoid traveling in this area if possible. Crews are working to improve road conditions."

Taylor County - 6:22 a.m. 

"It's 19 degrees and there is no moisture falling at this time. Crews have reported that IH 20 is damp but clear of ice and snow. Traffic is flowing at normal speeds on IH 20. Reduce your speed, increase following distance, and do not engage cruise control. Buckle up!"

Kent County - 6:16 a.m. 

"It’s 16 degrees with a light mist falling. Crews are reporting ice on state-maintained roads.  We are working to improve road conditions but travel is discouraged at this time."

Mitchell County - 6:04 a.m.

"Traffic on IH 20 is flowing at slow to normal speeds. Moisture is falling, therefore the roadways are wet. Reduce your speed, increase following distance, and do not engage cruise control.  Make sure you are buckled up. 

Other state-maintained roads in Mitchell County have ice in them. Travel is discouraged at this time. Crews are working to improve road conditions."

Haskell County - 6 a.m.

"Crews are reporting ice on state-maintained roads this morning.  It's 19 degrees and moisture is falling. Travel is discouraged at this time. Crews are working to improve conditions."

Callahan County - 5:55 a.m.

"IH 20 is wet with traffic moving slow. Wet roads mean reduce your speed, increase following distance, and do not engage cruise control.  Make sure to buckle up. 

There has been a report of two jack-knifed 18 wheelers on SH 36 east of FM 2287. Law enforcement is on the scene.
