ABILENE, Texas — Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy in Abilene has opened registration for its STEM-driven college prep experience, Raider Rx Camp.

The camp is designed for high school students who are interested in learning more about the pharmacy profession. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 24-27 at the Abilene TTUHSC Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy, 1718 Pine St.

“Pharmacists do so much more than filling prescriptions,” TTUHSC Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy Abilene regional dean, Sara Brouse, Pharm.D., said. “This summer camp will allow high school students to discover the science behind medications and learn the key roles that pharmacists play in the health care system through activities led by our pharmacy professors and current pharmacy students."

The immersive day camp will allow students to participate in:

  • Group discussions and hands-on activities exploring the practice of pharmacy in a variety of settings.
  • Scientific laboratory activities that include making lip-balm, creams and exploring chemical reactions.
  • Simulated exercises to develop professional and leadership skills.
  • Field trips to local pharmacy practice locations.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects growth for pharmacists between 2022 and 2032 to be at approximately 3%. About 13,400 openings for pharmacists are projected yearly, on average, over the decade. The TTUHSC Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy aims to train future health care leaders in pharmacy and research.

“In Abilene, the Raider Rx pharmacy camp is focused on the role of the pharmacist ‘from molecule to market,’ throughout the continuum of settings from when the drug is discovered all the way to when a patient receives it,” Brouse said. “The camp is a great opportunity for students who want to pursue a health-related career but aren’t sure which path to take.”

Camp registration is $75. To register, click here. Deadline for applications is May 28.
