SAN ANGELO, Texas — Want to learn more about the San Angelo Independent School District's Emergent Bilingual Program and Title 1 - here's your opportunity.

The district is hosting a free, family-friendly community resource night, “Manos a la Obra”, from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Bradford Elementary School, 2302 Bradford St.

Manos a la Obra is an opportunity for SAISD families to learn more about the district's bilingual program and resources offered throughout San Angelo while enjoying fun such as:

  • Children’s book giveaways
  • Snacks and refreshments
  • Activities with Lake View High School ambassadors student group and STEM program
  • Help with the registration process for the 2024-2025 school year
  • San Angelo READS! story-time read alouds.

The bilingual program, now in its fourth year, uses the students' primary language of Spanish as a resource while acquiring full proficiency in English including listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Developing a child’s home language is critical for developing their English language skills. Research has shown that English learners who receive bilingual instruction at an early age are more successful academically and have higher achievements in later grades.

“Knowing what resources are available in the community is crucial for parents and students as it provides additional support, opportunities for enrichment, and personal development beyond the school or home environment,” SAISD Director of Emergent Bilingual, Christy Diego, said. “It facilitates networking with individuals and organizations that can offer assistance, advice, or mentorship. Access to essential services ensures students and families can improve their well-being and academic success. Ultimately, awareness of available resources empowers parents and students to make informed decisions and take advantage of opportunities to positively impact their lives.”

Community partners and resources include the Children’s Advocacy Center of Greater West Texas, La Esperanza Clinic, Howard College, the Adult Literacy Council, the Boys and Girls Club of the Concho Valley, Concho Valley Regional Food Bank, H-E-B, Sky High, Region 15 Early Childhood Intervention and Migrant Programs, Alcohol and Drug Awareness Center of the Concho Valley, YMCA and more.
