SAN ANGELO, Texas — For many children in the foster care system, turning 18 isn't always exciting.
When these children become legal adults, they might struggle finding a place to go.
New Journey San Angelo "is a ministry to foster care with a focus on aged-out youth," board treasure Rebeka Samples said.
For the past three years, this organization has organized its Trail of Treats event, welcoming Halloween enthusiasts while raising money for young adults in need of support.
"It's just an opportunity for non-profits giving back to our community and to our kids," Samples said.
Volunteers dressed in costume and drove hayrides through the facility from 5-8:45 p.m. Oct. 21, 4331 Hatchery Rd.
Hotdogs were given out for free to the first 500 guests and after that, pulled pork sandwiches were available for purchase.
All of the funds, Samples said, will go towards the goal of building eight colonies, or studio apartments, with bedrooms, bathrooms, etc. for aged-out fosters.
Funding will also support the creation of the Hive, which will serve as a communal space for those living in the colonies.
Even before 5 p.m., attendees were lined up in costumes ranging from Mario characters to Wednesday Addams.
"We're expecting to see a lot of people. I'm really hoping for a good turnout," Samples said. "This is going to be an awesome place for aged out youth. I have a heart for foster care, I'm a foster parent, I've adopted before so this is something my heart is truly for."
The event was also sponsored by various organizations and Samples hopes to increase donations from community members. Even $10 a month, she said, would help the cause.
Last year, approximately 1,000 participants attended.
This year, Samples hopes for even more.
