SAN ANGELO, Texas — Yesterday was a hot one throughout West Texas. The high temperature officially reached 98 degrees in Abilene and 102 at Mathis Field in San Angelo. Today will be even hotter throughout the region with plenty of sunshine.

This excessive heat, combined with high humidity values, will cause heat index values to climb to near 110 degrees in places for the afternoon and evening hours. Values over 110 are possible further to east where the humidity will be even higher with dew points in the middle 70s expected.

Because this is dangerous heat that the area has not seen yet so far this year, parts of the region are under a heat advisory. The heat advisory will go into effect starting at 1 p.m. and last through 7 p.m. Thursday.

Although not everyone is currently under a heat advisory, widespread and dangerous heat is expected throughout the region. If you have any plans outside today, make sure to take numerous breaks and make sure to drink plenty of water.

Temperatures are expected to decrease slightly as summer officially gets underway starting Friday. Temperatures will be near average this weekend for the drag boat races at Lake Nasworthy Saturday and Sunday. Expect plenty of sunshine and breezy conditions, with temperatures in the mid-90s.
