Tesla planning to renovate 35,000-square-foot building in Hutto

The move is the latest in a long line of investments Tesla has made into Central Texas.

HUTTO, Texas — Tesla is continuing to expand its footprint in Central Texas with a new building in Hutto.

While it hasn’t been confirmed what the building will specifically be used for, the City of Hutto did confirm that Tesla is the new tenant of the property.

The building is on CR 199, about 25 miles north of the Gigafactory in southeast Austin. Tesla plans to pour $1.5 million into renovations on this building – something the City of Hutto said it is looking forward to.

“With the substantial technology investments continuing to come to Hutto and our neighbors, East Wilco is becoming the place to be for future-focused development,” Ashley Bailey, Hutto’s director of Development Services, said in a statement.

The move from Tesla is the latest in a long line of investments the company has made into Central Texas. Back in October, the company revealed that their Gigafactory has supported more than 15,000 jobs in Travis County.

The City of Hutto said once the project passes more inspections, it can announce more specifics about the type of operations that take place at the property.

Construction is expected to start Jan. 10 and wrap up by the end of February.

Hutto wanted the Gigafactory

An interesting side note: Hutto was gunning for Tesla to build their Gigafactory in their city back in 2014. KVUE reported that the year before Tesla decided, Hutto hosted Tesla representatives eight times to get them to consider building there. They also set aside more than 1,000 acres to build the factory.

At that time, Tesla decided on building a Gigafactory outside Reno, Nev.
