GRAPE CREEK, Texas — Classes at the Grape Creek Independent School District start in less than two weeks. Thanks to school staff and administration, students will be able to walk through the doors with a fresh new haircut and free school supplies.

Amy Flint, GISD social service liaison, wants all students to have the opportunity to feel good and refreshed for the new school year. She is also one of the main people involved with planning the back-to-school haircut bash.

"It's just to allow parents not to have to spend money on hair haircuts. It'll help homeless people as well and less fortunate people," Flint said.

A Meet the Teacher event has been held for a little more than 20 years at Grape Creek ISD, but this is the first year haircuts and social services fair is happening, and the school community is excited to start it off on a great note.

"We're excited to come back together. We consider ourselves more of a family than a staff...we are all on board," Katherine Pearce, intermediate principal for third-fifth graders, said.

A couple of hundred students are expected to show up to these upcoming events, and Flint said she is looking forward to it.

"They're super excited—a lot of these parents. I've had a lot who've reached out to me and thank the school for doing this," she said.

Grape Creek ISD is expected to distribute about 1,100 school supply packets. They are also planning to pass out free hair conditioner and combs for students.

The meet the teacher event will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17. The haircut bash and social services fair is set to take place from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22.

Classes start at Grape Creek Independent School District Tuesday,  Aug. 24
