Winter storm will cause travel issues on New Year's Eve

Scattered rain showers Wednesday will transition to ice overnight, and eventually snow for New Year's Eve.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — UPDATE: (6 a.m. Dec. 31): Rain, mixed with freezing rain and sleet continues east of a line from Eldorado to Merkel (including both Abilene and San Angelo). West of this line, all snow. The snow line will continue to push east through the morning and early afternoon. 

ORIGINAL STORY: Scattered rain showers Wednesday afternoon are expected to continue through the evening. This activity will be isolated in nature. Coverage increases overnight. Rain will transition to an icy mix early Thursday morning across West Texas, with freezing rain and sleet likely.

By the afternoon hours Thursday, ice will transition to mostly snow throughout the area.

Snow will continue through the evening hours Thursday and should come to an end slightly before we ring in 2021.

Winter storm warnings have been issued ahead of this system. These will go into effect at midnight Thursday and last through 6 p.m. Thursday.

When exactly ice transitions to snow is still in question Thursday morning. The earlier it does so, the more snow accumulation and the later it does so, the less snow accumulation. As of Wednesday afternoon, snow totals of 3-6 inches are expected across a good portion of West Texas.
