Those holiday blues can affect your four-legged pet

Spot Pet Insurance shares some signs to be on the look out for if you suspect your pup may have sadness or depression.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The holiday blues are real.

And it's not just humans. vets say your four legged friend can feel blue this time of year too. For example, Have you ever had that feeling of after a satisfying vacation, you experience a bout of post-vacation or holiday sadness as you get  back into the routine of work or school?

Well turns out your pet can have all of the same feels too

During the holiday, with vacation time pets often spend more time with their owners. Then Once the holiday is over, they can find it difficult to adjust when family members return to their daily routines. 

According to Purina Institute up to 70% of behavioral issues in dogs can be attributed to stress and anxiety. 

Spot Pet Insurance shares signs to look out for when it comes to depression in your pets.

"Loss of interest in things that normally bring them joy such as going for walks or greeting you at the door. A loss of appetite can be very crucial to look out for or if they are sleeping more than usual or sleeping less than usual that can also be a sign of depression in dogs," Cassidy Laudano, Spot Pet Insurance's Public Relations said. 

And just like in humans, pet depression can develop overtime or come about with a change of environment.

"Loosing a loved one whether that be the owner or the co-parent or even loosing another animal in the house. Things like that can take affect them health wise and even have long term effects on their health," Laudano said. 

If you think your pet is depressed, Laudano said reach out to your pet's veterinarian right away.
