ABILENE, Texas —

A Merkel man was killed in a multi-motorcycle collision Tuesday, the Abilene Police Department said.

Just before noon Tuesday, APD officers responded to a major vehicle collision involving a motorcycle in the 4300 block of Pine Street in north Abilene. The initial call to dispatch reported multiple motorcycles involved in the crash and several injuries, according to the APD.

Officers arrived at the scene and found one rider, identified as Brayden Shockley, 30, of Merkel, dead. Two other motorcycle riders were injured. Witnesses told police three motorcycles had been traveling northbound side-by-side on Pine Street just before the collision.

Shockley was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The two other riders were taken to Hendrick Medical Center by ambulance for their injuries.

The APD said speed appears to be a factor in the collision and it is currently unknown if intoxication was a factor.

The department's Traffic Division continues investigating the collision.
