'Women in Aviation' theme for 2024 Dyess Big Country AirFest

The flightline will feature aircraft and displays from the W.A.S.P. Museum in Sweetwater.

DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas — The flightline for the Dyess Big Country AirFest 2024 will feature aircraft and displays from the W.A.S.P. Museum in Sweetwater as part of its “Women in Aviation”, scheduled for Saturday, May 4, on the west side of Abilene Regional Airport.

“The ability for AirFest attendees to purchase a flight on a vintage aircraft has been so popular in years past, we have a new selection of flight aircraft for 2024,” 2024 AirFest chair, Steve Krazer, said.

Aircraft attendees can purchase flights on include A 1929 Ford Tri-Motor and a World War II Era B-25 Bomber.

In addition to the Ford Tri-Motor and B-25, this year’s AirFest will feature a World War II era P-40 Warhawk fighter, “Spanky” Galloway in his Extra 300, Mark Mastren in his Super Stearman, a performance by crowd favorite Ron Cain in his de Havilland Chipmunk, aerial demonstrations by a Dyess B-1B bomber, a C-130J cargo aircraft, as E-3 AWACS and many more.

Local Experimental Aircraft Association members will demonstrate aircraft they recently completed building. There will be many static displays ranging from warbirds to experimental aircraft, a C-130J from Dyess and a significant 12th Armored Division Museum display.

The Dyess Big Country AirFest is a volunteer collaboration between members of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 471, Dyess Air Force Base, the Civil Air Patrol, Abilene Regional Airport and a host of loyal sponsors led this year by the Boeing Company.

The gate at AirFest will open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase throughout the day. Air show activities kick off at noon.
