BROWN COUNTY, Texas — A 3-year-old boy is in the Cook Children's Medical Center intensive care unit Monday after shooting himself with a gun he found in his father's vehicle, Brown County Sheriff Vance Hill says.

According to Hill, at around 11 a.m. Sunday, Brown County deputies responded to Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood in reference to a child injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The boy was said to have been traveling with his father on County Road 234 when he gained access to a pistol the father carried in his vehicle. The father rushed the boy to the hospital emergency department where lifesaving measures were started.

The child was later flown by helicopter to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, where he underwent emergency surgery and is currently in ICU.

The BCSO says the incident is currently under investigation.
