Winters woman dies after being hit by school bus while walking on road shoulder

COKE COUNTY, Texas — A Winters woman walking back to her vehicle after running out of gas was killed Thursday morning when a school bus hit her.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said in a preliminary crash report a Blue Bird bus, driven by Barbra Ann Sparks of Robert Lee, was traveling west of State Hwy 158. She saw a vehicle coming from behind the bus and moves over to the westbound shoulder of the road to let it pass.

Tamara Jo Mathis, 35, of Winters, was walking west on the westbound shoulder of the highway with a container of gasoline. 

According to the report, Sparks didn't see Mathis until the bus had moved onto the shoulder and hit her. 

Mathis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sparks was taken to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo for treatment of minor injuries.
